The Reel Deal: 10 Things to Know About Reel Mowers

1. A lightweight reel mower gives you a great reason to exercise a couple times a week while doing something useful. At around 20 lbs., reel mowers are a cinch to push, but you'll still get a nice little workout.

2. Powder coated metal components are more resistant to chipping, cracking, and other types of damage that can wear out other kinds of finishes. And the colors will remain vibrant and bright, which may not be necessary, but it's nice.

3. Sealed bearings are a common sense design feature on all well-constructed reel mowers. This means there won't be a bunch of gunk clogging up the moving parts. This leaves you with more time to drink lemonade, stroll barefoot, and lie in the shade.

4. With regular use of your reel mower, you don't absolutely need a grass catcher.  But if you let the grass get too long, you'd better have some way to remove the longer clippings that could otherwise could damage your lawn.

5. Electric reel mowers take the best of self-propelled mowers and reel mowers and combine them. They're easy to maneuver, require little maintenance, and are eco-friendly.

6. An electric reel mower is perfect for a small lawn, but because many require a heavy extension cord, you may want a battery powered mower if you have a larger lawn.

7. Electric reel mowers are still quite lightweight, usually weighing around 30 lbs. This is still a far sight lighter than your standard gas powered mower, meaning a more leisurely stroll around the yard on those hot summer days.

8. If you're looking for maximum efficiency, check out a reel gang mower that you can tow behind a riding mower. These often consist of several 2-foot wide reel mowers on a flexible frame that can adapt to the contours of your property.

9. For best results with your gang mower or reel mowers in general, you'll want to cut the grass low and frequently. Because of the ease of pushing and operating reel mowers, we find this is not a great hindrance on a normal schedule.

10. The range of price and quality available with reel mowers make them accessible for all people and great for a variety of uses. So whether you're a renter with a small lot to care for or a property owner with sprawling land, you should consider a reel mower or gang mower.
